Whitley Bay Islamic Cultural Centre

1999
Humble Beginnings
Abdul Hannan first established Whitley Bay Islamic Centre, within his own home. At this time there were only 5 children attending classes and a few attending the daily prayers.
2000
Our First Set of Students

After a year of difficulties in managing the centre, Mr Hannan finally witnessed the fruits bearing. At this point the Whitley Bay Islamic Centre had drawn attention through its excellent teaching standards.

May 2005
Annual Islamic Contest

The WBICC Annual Islamic Contest 2005 was held over a period of two weeks in May and June 2005. The final day or The Presentation Day of the Contest was held on 19th June 2005. It was the closing day of two weeks of contests in Islamic and Arabic studies among our pupils. On the day prizes were given to winners of the various contests that were held over the two weeks. Presents were also given to the participants for their contribution, hard work and achievements.

There were over 200 guests on the day to witness the presentation of prizes and to see the result of the effort that goes behind the education of kids in WBICC. We also had a few special guests who kindly took time out of their busy schedules to attend the event. Among them were MP of North Tyneside - Alan Campbell, Elected Mayor - John Harrison and a few other important figures.

Special thanks goes to everyone that attended our Presentation Day Ceremony and made the day special for our children and the community in Whitley Bay. We also congratulate all the participants who took part in this year's contests and put their best efforts and made it a success. We will be looking forward to staging similar events next year by the will of Allah (SWT).

September 2006
Celebration Event

In September 06, an event was held to celebrate Whitley Bay’s Islamic Cultural Centre’s (WBICC) most successful year to date. 150 local people, including representatives from the voluntary and community sector gathered at the Centre to celebrate achievements, listen to success stories and find out more about the activities that are held at the Centre.

During the day, the audience listened to a range of presentations, including recitations from the Quran, poetry in Bangla language and a yearly report from the tutors. Mr Alan Campbell, MP and Mr John Harrison, North Tyneside Elected Mayor were guests of honour at the celebration and praised the high achievement of the children and adults who attend the Centre. They were delighted to hear the success stories, see the motivation of the community as well as witness how representatives from a range of organisations including the Community Network, the local Police, Education and Cultural Services, Children's University, and the Tyne and Wear Museums; worked in partnership to support and celebrate these achievements.

The achievements that were being celebrated as part of the day included: the success of the Homework Club, which helps to increase students confidence and build on the work of local schools. Other successful projects include ‘Chatterbooks’, where students who love reading share their enthusiasm, ideas and knowledge with their friends. As part of this project, WBICC was selected to be part of “Reading is Fundamental”, a National project encouraging reading amongst young people. As a result of this, the project issued over 180 books to the Homework Club students and their families.
